While the aircraft may see its fair share of interception missions, it is entirely possible that this deployment serves two underlying purposes:

1. to ensure that a strong military presence in the region sends a not so veiled message to North Korea and, ultimately, China

2. to evaluate in real world scenarios a potential successor to the Japanese SDF F-15.

Japan is currently one of the few, if not only nation(s) that could afford such technology when/if the US decided to allow the export to Japan.
