I was praying you wouldn't find that... A man flying out of Kansas City International Airport was arrested after telling security that $70,000 in cash he had in is pants pockets were actually Muslim prayer books, according to an article in USA Today. After setting off alarms twice, Don A. White, Jr. of Sacramento was patted down by security, which noticed the bulk. He first claimed they were prayer books, but admitted he was Christian. He agreed to put the "books" in a tray and put them through the x-ray machine, but then took off running. He was caught and arrested when the cash was discovered. The money allegedly came from a mortgage fraud scheme in the Kansas City area in which loans were obtained using inflated property appraisals, the article said.
Well that luggage didn't just fly into the pet store trash cans. Houston FBI agents are investigating how 68 pieces of luggage belonging to international flyers ended up in a dumpster behind a local pet store, according to a story in the International Herald Tribune. A spokeswoman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the bags belonged to travelers flying out of Houston Intercontinental on flights to London and Dubai. Continental Airlines has been given the bags to get them to their rightful owners.
Run onto the runway and stop that jet!! Brazilian travelers stormed a runway at an airport in Sao Paulo to stop a jet from taking off after becoming angry about an overbooked flight, according to an article in the Houston Chronicle. Thirty passengers with tickets on a TAM flight to Recife waited on a bus for more than 40 minutes to board, and some got off the bus as they saw the flight crew close the jet door on the full flight. Local police removed the passengers from the tarmac, but the flight was still delayed for 2 hours. Similar incidents happened at other Brazilian airports the week of Christmas because of delays.
But why can't I fry a turkey in the airport? It's Christmas! Here's another one from Joel at SkyOne. An administrative office party at Washington Dulles drew complaints from the fire marshal and union officials after it was discovered that workers were deep frying a turkey in the building, according to a story in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The article quotes a letter written by Kieron Heflin, a representative with the air traffic controllers union: "It has . . . come to my attention that the Dulles management decided it would be a nice idea to DEEP FRY A TURKEY in the Dulles administrative quarters, surrounded by carpet, linoleum, an airport, aircraft, a control tower, thousands if not millions of gallons of jet fuel and thousands of passengers and employees." The fire marshal ordered the fryer shut off.
You mean there's a rule against checking bags leaking blood? I found this one at fark.com. A plastic surgeon missed his original Qantas flight after staffers noticed that blood was leaking from his luggage, according to an article in Stuff.co.nz.com. The surgeon told staff that his luggage had a plastic bag full of used surgery gowns, a blood-soaked towel and surgical instruments in steel trays. He was forced to seal his bag inside a plastic bag, then boarded a later flight.
You buy just about anything on eBay. The state of Alaska has announced plans to use eBay to sell a corporate jet used by its former governor, according to an article at PoliticalGateway.com. The $2.5 million Westwind II executive jet was used by former governor Frank Murkowski despite objections from the state legislature. Incoming governor Sarah Palin swore to get rid of the jet if she was elected, and she is making good on her promise. The fiasco was seen as playing a large role in Murkowski's losing his re-election bid.
