An Iraqi national caused a security scare at Los Angeles International Airport after screeners discovered wires on his body and a magnet inside his rectum, reports the New Zealand Herald. Fadhel al-Maliki, 35, set off the alarm during a routine screening, and the bomb squad was called to check what was called a suspicious item during a body cavity search, said the newspaper. He was on his way to Atlantic City, via Philadelphia on US Airways. he was questioned about his strange behavior, but it was determined he was not a threat.
Maybe that TSA random employee screening program isn't such a bad idea. Off-duty Comair employee Thomas Anthony Munoz, 22, was arrested after allegedly bringing 13 handguns, one assault rifle and eight clear bags containing marijuana and drugs aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Orlando to Puerto Rico, according to WFTV News. He was arrested in Puerto Rico on weapons violations and put into federal custody, said the report.
And speaking of guns, the former mayor should have known better. Former El Paso Mayor Joe Wardy was caught by airport security carrying a gun in his luggage, reports KFOX-TV. He was going through security when a TSA screener found a loaded Beretta .22 caliber handgun in his bag. He was stopped for questioning, then the case was turned over to the FBI. Wardy was not arrested, but faces federal charges and an FAA fine as high as $10,000.
Ferrovial to General Mitchell Airport -- lost in translation. Spanish newspaper El Economista, is reporting that BAA parent Grupo Ferrovial was looking at buying Milwaukee's General Mitchell Airport. The only problem is it isn't up for sale, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The newspaper noted that county officials have studied the option, but airport privatization nationwide is facing skepticism in Congress because virtually all of the companies interested in taking over U.S. airports are based overseas.
He must have been on some really bad meds. Roger Escobedo was arrested at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport after being accused of spying on a woman in a restroom, according to WSVN-TV. A woman accused Escobedo of looking under her stall while she used herself of the facilities. He claimed that he had just been released from a Veterans Administration Hospital and was affected by medication he was taking. He was arrested and charged with misdemeanor voyeurism.
You can't just upgrade yourself to first class. A German man was arrested after refusing repeated requests to leave first-class and return to his economy class seat on a Delta flight from Berlin to JFK Airport, according to the Manchester Evening News. Bert Niepel, 51, a banker, pushed a flight attendant backward as she served other passengers and had to be restrained by his fellow travelers. The pilot was so concerned that he locked the cockpit and diverted the flight to the UK's Manchester Airport, where Niepel was arrested. He pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening, abusive, insulting or disorderly manner towards the crew on board flight 79.
The luck of the Irish didn't work in this case. An Irish tourist was arrested and jailed after becoming unruly on a British Airways flight from London to Phoenix, according to the Ottawa Sun. David Gerard McAuliffe, 38, was arrested after being thrown off a British Airways flight where he had allegedly become unruly after being refused more alcohol. The pilot was so concerned about McAuliffe's behavior that he landed in Winnipeg and had the airport police meet the plane. The tourist was charged with mischief, causing a disturbance and failing to comply with instructions of a flight crew following the pilot's decision to bump him from the plane, said the Sun.
I hope you didn't park the car at London Gatwick Airport-based Pink Meet And Greet. Airport parking operator Pink Meet and Greet tried to dump hundreds of car keys at the headquarters of BAA's London Gatwick management staff as it suddenly closed its doors for business last week, according to LifeStyle Extra. The BBC did a television expose of the company, alleging that Pink Meet and Greet staff took customers' cars for high-speed joyrides. Most customers were unaware of the situation until they returned home from vacation. BAA has tapped parking company NCP to help sort through the mess.
These snakes almost got on the plane! Workers at a northern Malaysian airport cargo complex found 2,400 banded rat snakes in 86 crates going to Hong Kong, according to the Winnipeg Free Press. The snakes, a protected species not usually found in Malaysia, were being shipped by smugglers from Thailand. They are considered a delicacy in Asia, according to the New Straits Times.

Dr. David Ho, heir to the Hong Kong tobacco fortune and head honcho of Vancouver-based Harmony Airways, was pulled over by Vancouver Police at 5:30 a.m. a couple of days ago in Vancouver's seedy east side for erratic driving, according to PlaneBuzz. And riding shotgun with Dr. Ho in his Porsche Cayenne were two, um, female escorts and what appeared to be a bag of crack cocaine in the back seat. Dr Ho, who has, according to the media report, made numerous donations to the Vancouver Police Dept. over the years, was overheard by the officer involved calling the VPD Chief and asking him" to do something" about the issue.

Bali's airports and seaports will be closed for a 24-hour period on March 19, 2007 for the celebration of Hari Nyepi -- the official day of silence and solitude that marks the New Year of 1929 on the Balinese calendar. During the period from approximately 6:00 a.m. on Monday March 19, 2006 to 6:00 a.m. the following morning the airport will be closed to all domestic and international flight operations. "The temporary closure of the Ngurah Rai International Airport for 24-hours on Monday, March 19, 2007, will mark the ninth time since 1999 that the airport has been closed (for Nyepi)", explained Drs. Putu Ardhana, the Head of Bali’s Transportation office.
